FYI

I have received information from RPU Traffic Management that the company who look after the Variable Speed cameras between Jct 10 - 15 on the M25 on behalf of the Metropolitan police are ACTIVATING the cameras from 15/02/08. The current cameras are analogue and the speed for enforcement is set at 93mph. However the system is changing to Digital and the Commissioner as directed the company to set the cameras at ACPO guidelines, this will be 80mph.

So all the fools who drive the M25 at 90 (on their inaccurate speedos AND when they're not parked there) will get nicked. Good!

So it looks like they will be set at 70 + 10% + 2mph = 79.

To trigger the cameras, with a speedo which can over-read by up to 10%, someone would have to be driving, watching there speedo hovering around 87 mph to get 'nicked'.

The old cameras, set at 93 mph, people would have had to see the speedo nudging 102'ish.

No sympathy from me when they get caught.

(Bring back the man with the 'red flag', I say). Razz

Could you forward to all other operational officers as this will affect them as well as majority use M25 to get around

PNB = Pocket Note Book?

In other words, if you go on the M25 J10-15 make a note of it beside the call code (iCAD = i???? Computer Aided Dispatch??) so we know if you get caught speeding that you were on a "shout" and can show which one.

Yiup PNB = PocketNoteBook and ICad is the CAD room (Computer Aided Dispatch or Control Room) Incident number. i.e. If you trigger one on duty and have a legitimate reason, log an incident and record it for use in defence at a later stage.

Can someone answer me this:

if you are heading towards one of these cameras and the sign says 60 and then just as you almost pass under the sign you notice the speed changes to 40 or 50, but you don't have time to slow down, will the driver be caught out?

According to this you are given 5 minutes by the software before they start to enforce the speed. As such in the above situation you will be safe.

But how would you know whether you were passing the camera at 4min 59s ("safe") or 5min 1s ("unsafe")?

Is it really worth taking a chance, or safer to assume that the cameras activate within a few seconds of the speed limit changing?

Let's face it - quite often when the variable speed limit is active, you would have to speed up in order to get clocked

I think the point that was being made was that if you had just witnessed them change in front of you there was no need to hit the brakes to reduce your speed to the new limit. A gradual controlled reduction would be fine.

That was the intent of my last post. Driving with tight white knuckles leaning forward towards the windscreen at the heady speed of 70 isn't a good ideas if you had plenty of time to slow down.

The grace period is presumably designed to stop people doing emergency breaking every time the gantries change or, indeed, punish those that do safe driving and perform the controlled reduction of speed for the next one.
