|
|
I am considering purchasing a 920. I understand that at present is it is not capable of transmitting phone conversations via the FM radio signals to the car set. What I would like to know from anyone with a technical knowledge on satellite navigation units is. If in the future TomTom decide to encompass this facility is it thought that this could be done by the software in the form of a download or would it be only on new systems. I am particularly interested for the hands-free side of the unit and I am therefore wondering whether I should wait to see what developments are made in this field. Any help in this matter would be appreciated in arriving at a decision. |

I don't know why the x20 range cannot output the phone hands free via the FM Tx, we managed to get it working on the x10 devices, then the next software upgrade TomTom made the work around non functional Whether they ever make this an option is anyones guess to be honest - Mike |

Just a thought, but I'm betting they don't use the FM Tx for hands-free because most people don't want their conversations broadcast to those around them in traffic.
Best bet would be a new head unit with a AUX line-in. These used to be pretty expensive, but are now the norm thanks to the iPod. |

Even the Line Out won't supply the phone handsfree audio, its the inbuilt speaker or nothing - Mike |

Just a guess, but I suspect it might be down to licensing restrictions.
In the same way that the Text-to-speech voice technology is licensed from Loquendo for use on the Go but cannot be used when the Go is connected to the PC, the Hands-free 'echo cancellation' software is licensed from Accoustic Technologies and maybe they think it only works well enough on the internal speaker so won't let it be used in any other way. |
