Confused
Hi
I have just received my Axim X5, 256Meg CF card and tt2 software.
All appears to work, however....
I have installed all to the CF card, is this wrong?
The reason I ask is while disconnected from the GPS receiver the tt2 software will on occassions not be accessable, and the quick link on the front screen stops working. If I deselect this from being displayed, then reselect it it will start working again.
Most times clicking on start and tt2 will work, but this morning it did not until a soft reset.
I thought that the software would be fine without the GPS receiver connected, am I wrong, or have I done something wrong?
I have looked throught the pages and cannot find this answered anywhere else.

Don't worry, this is nothing serious.

The start menu gets created when the machine boots up. At that time it doesn't yet know that it has a CF card in the slot. Therefore any shortcuts that point to the CF card will not have the right icon associated. If you tap it it will work fine nonetheless.

The same problem occurs when you try to run programs on startup or on wakeup - when these programs are not in main memory then there is a good chance the PocketPC will not execute them - because it wakes up first and then re-connects to the storage card.

Let's call it a mild design flaw...

Thanks for the reply, just to keep you updated, I reinstalled the application into the main memory, and the maps onto the CF card. This has fixed all the problems.
Thanks again.
Carl.

It may have fixed the problem, but now you created anohter one - you have reduced the available RAM. So if you load larger maps or plan longer routes you will see the machine become unstable quicker..

That's not entirely true. Of course it depends on the SD card brand. SanDisk cards have a particularly bad reputation.

Even then - I am running all my programs off the (SanDisk) 256MB SD card, and haven't seen any issue with that yet. Of course it is iimportant to defragment the disk from time to time.

The only thing that you cannot install to the storage card (even though you may have specified that as the destination) is the TomTOm GPS driver. That one will always end up in the \windows directory.

Having everything on the storage card also has the advantage that you can be up and running quickly after a complete power outage. You make a full backup of the main memory to SD card (and this backup is pretty small since all the programs are on th ard already and don't need backup) and then when you had the power outage all you need to do is a restore of the main memory data from the SD card.

damn right!!! moved '\program files\navigator' to '\cf card', modified shortcuts, modified registry settings that point to the voice files, and drove about 50kms. trouble free indeed!!! Thumbs Up

didn't try moving to '\sd card' as i already had problems with it.

i thought with more ram available, i would try running pocketmusic with tomtom. still didn't work. navigator freezes after 5mins.

well, check if you can free up some more RAM with the same method. My MP3 player works just fine in the background

My work horse is an iPAQ 3970, with PocketPC2002. I can't upgrade to WM2003 because my GSM/GPRS jacket doesn't support that.

You may have been trapped in the "32 process limit" situation. WM2003 is notorious for shortage of process slots. Can you check your \windows\startup folder and see if you can remove some of the startup items that you don't need?

there's not much: bttrayce.lnk, fe_wa.lnk, and poutlook.lnk. i don't think it would do anything if i remove one or two.

could it be that the bluetooth gps takes up more resources than wired?

You should give it a try anyhow - every single process helps...

I don't know about the BT stack, but it may occupy more slots than a serial port. There alre alos some process viewers available for the PocketPC (for example as part of the embedded visual tools) - maybe that can give you a better answer.

got hold of a process viewer. only about 14 processes with both tomtom and pocketmusic. i'm starting to conclude that the problem is the bluetooth gps driver. perhaps it freezes when interrupted while in the process of receiving data. i don't know... maybe the serial port has better handshake than bluetooth...
