It seems like you can only change the car symbol when it is in 3D view. It reverts back to the default blue arrow in 2D. Why?

Why? 'Cos that's how TomTom have done it.

They probably just didn't bother to think that some people might use the 2D view...
Just like they never seemed to think that the way they implemented Mapshare would be a problem when it immediately halved the number of user POI categories available.

Surely this can be easliy fixed with a firmware upgrade, right?

Possibly.
The car cursor only works with the latest firmware on the x20 models, the fact they haven't got it working on any other TomTom, implies it's not a totally straightforward thing to do.

The main problem you would have is getting them to actually make the necessary change, however easy it might be. They are not the most responsive company when it comes to implementing users' ideas.

You're having a laugh... They might not be as quick as dealing with some open source apps, but they're a damn site better than trying to deal with other vendors (e.g. garmin). (And quicker than some open source projects who have their heads where the sun doesn't shine).

Back in 2006 I requested a few features... e.g. Disable auto-zoom option, show traffic on the nav display even if it isn't on your direct route, the ability to get updates, a few others... They said they'd pass it along to development & see what they could do.

What happened? Damn, but they're all in v7...

Wheras trying to get garmin to put the missing features back into their Nuvi range just gets excuses about how 'wonderful' the simple interface is, and that the mp3 player IS more important than traffic to a driver etc...

All I can say is you must have better suggestions than me then.... Smile

Some of my old 'ideas' that have not been implemented:

Return to switch on/off when external power applied, or make it optional. Was told it would never be re-implemented, but now in V7 it does turn OFF.

Allow text editing of names at the front or middle, not just the end. Would be SO useful, and surely easy to do.

Have separate volume controls for navigation voice, alert sound or voice, hands free calls and now mp3s, preferably all on one page.

Re-do the itinerary pages. They seem like a rushed add-on to the main program which was never properly finished.

Allow search off ALL entries in a POI category, not just first 100. They addressed this by reducing it to 24!

Ability to group user POIs so you can enable/disable several of them or activate/disactivate their "warn when near" settings all in one go.

Sort out some of the more pointless Planning preferences (eg walking route, when footpaths aren't mapped) and add the ones everyone wants, 'avoid minor roads' and avoid height or width restrictions.

'Navigate to' or 'via' Road Junction numbers.

'Avoid' entire roads

Introduce user 'regions' (like the London Congestion charge zone has been done) so you can avoid whole areas.

Plus a whole raft of ones for the new models, that I hope might happen.
