Hi all, was wondering if someone could give me some information - I'm looking into buying a sat nav which has speed camera detector and ipod connectivity, and was drawn towards the TomTom 710/720/910.

Could someone just explain to me how well the connectivity between the ipod and the tomtom is, such as what functions can you perform on the tomtom to control the ipod e.g, Can you search for songs/albums/artists on your tomtom, or is it just a case that the tomtom downloads all the ipod songs in a list and you have to scroll through the list?

Cheers for the help! This truly is an excellent forum - I'm so pleased i found it before i made my purchase!

Ben

The Speed Camera database from this site is probably the best maintained one anywhere.

As for connecting an iPod to a TomTom - why do you want to do this?

Simply a bigger screen mate, and i like the thought of a touchscreen ipod (albeit via the tomtom!). I know the 910 has 12gb of music storage available but if i've got an ipod, i'll have a playlist i can use in the car and on foot, rather than having to create a duplicate on the tomtom. The tomtom website states the 910 has a good compatiability feature with ipod but doesn't seem to go into detail.

Interesting that the rumours about the new ipod released tomorrow appears to suggest it'll have the touchscreen feature!

From the x20 manual (which I notice hasn't been updated from the x10 one - it refers to plugging the cable into the windscreen dock! On the x20 the connector is on the base of the unit itself.)
Quote:
Using your iPod® with your TomTom GO
You can connect your iPod to your GO with the TomTom iPod Connect Cable,
which is available as an accessory.
You can then control your iPod from your GO. Sound from your iPod will be
played over the internal speaker in your GO, or an external speaker if selected.
For more information about using different speakers, see Internal and
external speakers on page 23.
To use your iPod with your GO, do the following:
1. Plug the iPod Connect Cable into your iPod and into the windscreen dock.
2. In the Main Menu, tap Music and Media and then iPod control.
3. Follow the instructions on the screen to finish the connection.
You can now control your iPod through your GO. You select songs using the same buttons shown above in Playing music and audiobooks.

and those options are:
Quote:
• Playlist - tap this button to select a playlist.
• Artist - tap this button to select a song by a particular singer or group.
• Album - tap this button to select from a list of all the albums on your GO.
• Song - tap this button to select from all the songs on your GO.
• Genre - tap this button to select a particular type of music.
• Audiobooks - tap this button to select an Audiobook.
Note: Not all mp3 files contain information about the song, such as the artist
or genre. If the file contains no information, the file name is used as the song
title.

As far as I know, the relevant cable isn't available yet. It must be different from the one for the 910 as that needed a seperate audio output cable to go to the car radio.
