First a big thank you to DennisN for providing me with a step by step idiots guide to backing up files on myguide3100. Must have taken you hours to come up with that write up. Thanks for the time

I am now ready to move to the next stage of my gps journey. Can someone please explain something about coordinates. Myguide allows me to add POI,s by entering the coordinates if I know them. As I have now become aware, they are written in different formats. An example of a myguide coordinate format is N41.7122239, E18.7704813. I entered these coordinates on google earth and it zoomed in to the exact location on the map. If you have not used google earth, please try it.

I now have some locations I am trying to enter on my gps device but the coordinates are a different format e.g Easting 569354, northing 205950. I entered these coordinates on google earth and it said your search found no results. However the coordinates are for a place in chelmsford essex. It seems therefore that this format is not recognisable to google earth. Is there anyone out there who knows about converting Northing / Easting coordinates to a recognisable latitude/longitude format.

Looking forward to hearing from any experts

Thanks

The only program I know of is XLSConverter, from our very own Oldie.

I don't know it will do for you.

Thanks for your help. I think I must be doing something wrong as I have down loaded the files extracted them and can,t find what I am supposed to be using to do the coordinates conversion.

I have had another look and found out this is too technical for me right now especially as I am newbie. Does anyone know of other alternatives. If you have missed my previous post, this is my query...

I have just tried http://www.streetmap.co.uk/gridconvert.html . It does not seem to recognise Northing / Easting coordinate formats i.e Easting 569354, northing 205950. What I need to find out is how they can become recognisable for gps purposes. N41.7122239, E18.7704813 is a format that is recognisable and I used it to locate an area on google earth.

Expecting a divine intervention

Thanks

I am back again kartracer or anyone out there.

...When I enter the Northing / Easting coordinates on http://www.streetmap.co.uk/gridconvert.html it shows me the location within that map. Unfortunately it does not covert the coordinates to a recognisable format for transfer/ use on my gps device. My device doesn,t accept Northing / Easting coordinates formats. It needs to convert/ be in the following format N41.7122239, E18.7704813. Without that ,I cannot add POI,s by coordinates

Help...please

entering '569354,205950' as an OS Grid Reference brings up:

Lat (WGS84) N51:43:36 ( 51.726691 )
Long (WGS84) E0:27:02 ( 0.450694 )

you want the figures in the last brackets but add the N and E

todays lesson:

N51:43:36 = dms (degrees, minutes, seconds) format
51.726691 = decimal degrees [ (((sec/60)+min)/60)+deg ]

hope that helps

ps - feel free to also use: http://www.MaFt.co.uk/garmin/info_convert.htm for DMS to decimal degrees conversions

My apologies to kartracer, I am gone again....it works ,,,,it works .......it works...hip hip hoorayy!!!!!!!. I now know where I made an error .I opened the link you sent to me opened it and bookmarked the page. When I went back into the link, it took me to the home page which did not allow northing /easting conversions to latitude / longitude.I then returned to the link you sent me and tried again and it gives me coordinates recognisable to my device.

Once again I have slapped myself and I have sent myself to my room as punishment for wasting yours /everyones time.

Thank you and with great embarassment, I am signing off

Ordnance Survey have some excellent on-line converters between OS grid and lat/long in various formats. Have a look here:
http://gps.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/etrs89cart_utm.asp

There is also one for the Irish grid.

And they have a downloadable spreadsheet that does all sorts of conversions:
http://www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/oswebsite/gps/osnetfreeservices/furtherinfo/spreadsheet.html

If you are using OS maps, bear in mind that there are two different OS projections - OSGB 36 that is used on the printed maps and the more modern OSGB 80.

Latitude and longitude are not absolute due to the irregular shape of the earth, and there are different projections. If you look at the OS site you will see references to WGS84 and ETRS89. To see the differences, look here:
http://www.hydro.nl/pgs/en/ETRS89_en.htm

If you want to know how accurate your GPS unit is, take it to one of the sites that have been very accurately surveyed by the OS. You can search for one near to you here:
http://gps.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/passive.asp
