|
|
Darn it, I wish I'd looked at this forum before I tried to be helpful and update my wife's new 520. All I get now is the flashing red cross of death. I restored the backup both using HOME and again manually, and neither has done a darn thing. I'm guessing some file is missing but I can't find a file listing of what should be there and I can't get back to the factory state from the CD as other people have suggested. What am I going to do?!!! |

It recommended the update to v7. of the TT app, and there were also some speed camera POIs but they didn't install for some reason. I followed the advice of doing a backup before the update, but I suspect it doesn't actually backup everything it needs! |

TomTom servers are having a hard time at the moment and will have for the next few weeks so downloading will be a hit or a miss. when you look in the back-up do you have the same amount of folders as the root of your TT. _________________ NEW Tomtom GO 500 (hope it is good)

Does your 520 mount on the desktop as a disk drive? If so, create a new folder on your PC and move 'ALL' the files and folders on the 520 into this new folder. When you are sure the 520 is empty, manually copy the original backup back to the 520.
The report back here. _________________ Darren Griffin |

On your computer do you have show-hidden files and folders selected? |

Well, no but the folders that were missing from the backup seemed to be less crucial stuff like the mp3 etc. I've tried three or four different approaches to restore but I didn't take a backup of what I had AFTER the original update as that seemed a little pointless as it didn't work!
I'm on Mac, so there are no files hidden from me (I always thought hidden files cause as many problems as they supposedly avert!) and I did the restore via HOME and then again by copying by hand, then deleting all the files and replacing from the backup and finally removing everything except the raster and maps folders and letting the original CD-installed version of HOME (v1.6) try to restore the missing software. Nothing.
I've read somewhere that there was also a firmware update recently, so perhaps that is the cause of the problems as that wouldn't be rolled back by just copying files.
I will now try to call TomTom support. |

|

After talking to TomTom customer support, I am both impressed by the level of customer service and, more importantly, I have working 520 again.
The last-ditch method to deal with the problem is to take a backup of what you've got on the device and then delete EVERYTHING from it. No raster, maps, voices, zip, nothing! Then you let HOME reinstall the app. However, you should go into HOME's download folder and clear it out first as some corrupted versions of the app and other incompatible files may be lingering there. This may not work first time (although it did for me) and if you have anti-virus on, switch it off (he said that also a firewall might potentially corrupt the download, but I doubt it, unless you wrote it yourself!) but make sure you repeat the clearing of the download folder each time.
Anyway, this done, your 520 should restart as before, but will warn you that it has no voices and if you try to navigate it will fail because it won't have any maps either. So copy the map folder, voices folder and zip (postcode search database) folder back to the device (and, if you like, the raster folder back to the device, although this isn't crucial) and you should be back in business.
I would then suggest getting HOME to do a backup and also doing a manual backup of your files, just in case.
Anyway, my life is no longer in danger ... Phew! |

Don't know if this is relevant but what maps were on the unit Originally?.
App 7 only works with the latest maps (I Think).
Anyway, i would have thought your NEW 520 would have had them on it. |
