Custom map problem on Vista Cx

I've got a custom map for Kabul, Afghanistan and some of the surrounding provinces. It's in a .img file and when i load it to the GPS itself, it only shows the map info around the Kabul vicinity only - e.g. when i hover the arrow over that region, it says "mapsource" down at the lower left, but if i venture outside the city with my cursor, it says "no map" (or "basemap" if i have it turned on). Now, if i load the map up in GPSMapEdit, i can see info for all the regions/cities expected.

Oddly though, it seems that my GPS is reading the fact that it has higher-level map data for a wider region - if i zoom out far enough, i'll see provincial boundaries and whatnot, but if i can only see those things if my cursor is over the Kabul area!

Anyone have any clue what's going on here? is there some change i need to make to the map?
