Currently am using both a Tom Tom 910 and a Garmin 276C in our Land Rovers in both the UK and Europe including Scandinavia and Eastern Europe.

In my experience the Tom Tom mapping is pretty good in the UK but go further away the detail and accuracy decreases. Off tarmac the Tom Tom is not very useful.

The Garmin 276C mapping is poor in comparison with the Tom Tom,it can show you up to 5 miles off route parallel tracking the road you are supposed to be on. The Garmin is much better off tarmac as it has the abillity to track your path and you can backtrack.

What is peoples opinion to be the best GPS system to be used off tarmac in places as far afield as Scandinavia, Eastern Europe and Australia.

Regards

It depends on what you want to acheive.

If you want mapping then your choice is either a mapping GPS handheld (e.g. GARMIN GPSMAP 60) or a PDA with mapping and GPS receiver.

The problem with either is the availability (or lack) of digital maps for the regions you intend to visit and the detail that you want to have available.

Have a look at Memory Map www.memory-map-com - they provide mapping for a number of countries.

There is always something like OziExplorer www.oziexplorer.com which would allow you to use any paper maps you have to create electronic maps for use on a PDA. BTW Oziexplorer was developed by an Aussie (no suprise there) for off-road vehicle travels in the outback.

As you will be in a vehicle - at least that is what I am assuming - the usual problem with lack of battery life with PDAs will not be so much of an issue.
