I am writing an application to track a bike race in real time. I am looking for a GPS unit that can do the following:
1. WAAS enablement
2. SIRFIII Technology
3. GPRS Communication capability over GSM network
4. TCP-IP transmission of GPS data
5. Very light weight
6. Small form-factor
I only have one advanced requirement. I will need your firmware to allow us to receive location updates every one to two seconds.
We have a vendor who claims to do most of these, but we cannot get TCP/IP to work and we are getting little to no tech support. Can anyone recommend a device that fits the above? Thanks! |

Is this for a powered race bike or human powered type? - the reason I ask is down to powering such a device, how long will it be expected to work for?
Either way I would look towards a device that combines the GPS receiver with a mobile phone in a single package, powering it is what will hit the weight budget.
Is once per second really needed, or could the device store say 60 seconds of data before transmitting - this opens up the posibility of using SMS - also what country are you in, and what vendor have you being pursuing to do this for you? -
Lots of questions, but a few answers might prod some people into coming up with some real answers - Mike |

Human powered. The device we currently have claims to last 24 hours. I don't think more than 10 will ever be needed. Yes, the one we have also combines a slot for a SIM card and uses that to communicate.
1 second is probably agressive, but the requirement will be no more than 5 seconds. The race is in the USA, but I think there are possibilities of doing others around the world.
I am a newbie to the board and if am asked again I'll answer your last question. I don't mean to be rude, but I want to be sure that I am not breaking any rules - written or unwritten by mentioning the vendor. On some boards it would be considered bad form, as the vendor may be a respected member of the community. |
