TomTom GO 300 Constantly Crashes/Locks up after "upgrad

Hi,

I have a GO 300, which has had the standard UK map since I got it a year ago.

I bought the map of Great Britain and Ireland with Western Europe from TomTom over the internet. It says to install the map using the new TomTom home software.

Anyway TomTom home said I had to upgrade the application software in order to upgrade the map.

When I do this, the TomTom either crashes on the splash screen or at some point during the setup. I have to reset the device. Then the cycle repeats.

The only way I can have a stable configuration is to roll the SD card back to copy I made before upgrading.

I have tried deleting everything off the SD card (1GB one from Jessops) and running the HOME software and this didnt work.

Rang TomTom and they said they hadn't heard of this issue and rekoned I was doing something wrong, but couldn't say what. They said that I should delete everything except the map folder, voices and zip. When I do this, the TomTom doesn't work, just sits at a screen with a cross over the SD card.

Any ideas?

as tomtom say it should work.. u could try copying the original back-up to another sd card useinga card reader and going from there..

some kind of file corruption is taking place while the upgrade operation is happening.. is the reason it dosnt work.. why i dont know..

its possible u have some extra stuff on the card that shouldnt be there.. there isnt that much room left over on a 1 gig card with W/E map on it..

i assume the 1 gig card works okay with old gb map on it.. ??

Yes, I agree its file corruption. I'll try a different SD card. The map I bought is only about 250Mb or so, and there is loads of space left over.

The damn thing works fine, so long as I use the old application software and the old map.

Its a pain having to use the TomTom home software to upload the map, since thats the only supported method. I wasn't able to download the map as a file. Something to do with the authentication I think, since when I go to copy the map over via the Home Explorer option, it briefly flashes up some authenticating message before it starts to copy the map over (painfully slowly! - maybe this is a clue?).

I'll try again tonight.

yes the full western euro map is nearly a gig in size.. just the gb plus major roads fits on a 256 card..

Thanks for that. A TomTom operative told me over the phone to just leave those three folders - Muppet!!

I'll give the manual install a go and let you know how I get on.

Same results with a manual install. I am going to delete all the cab files in the TomTom Home folder in my docs, and see what happens.

My personal opinion: Stop using Home if at all possible.
I'm convinced it has caused more confusion and errors than anything else.

They've made it hard but you CAN install the system software without Home (find it on Oldboy's site HERE)

and unzip the maps as per Oldboy's post above.
