Ipaq 3715, TT 5.2 Holux 231
I have been using TT3 then TT5 for a while and have not had many problems.
Around a month ago it started to take an age to get a satellite lock.
It would have been handy as I had just turned off the M4 because of an enormous tailback and needed it to find a new route. Swiched it all on, no lock, and never got one for the next 30 mins.
When home I tried it again with the same result. Deleted to Holux shortcut and then re-created a new pairing. No different.
Re-installed T5.2. No different.
Checked the TT GPS/bluetooth settings all correct.
I then noticed that the GPS Status in TT was changing, but it was greyed out with no Lat Long values displayed. The little UTC symbol in the top rh corner was happily rotating and the signal strength bars were rising and falling.
From all that I deduce that there is a GPS signal from the Holux, my pda is paired with it and it is being seen by TT but not reacting to it.
Has anyone some suggestions to solve this, please ?
Cheers

Does it say "no GPS device" or "the GPS signal was lost x minutes ago".
if the latter, then the fault is in the Holux device. If the former, then the Ipaq can't find the Holux.

It says "lost X minutes ago"
I tried it again yesterday and it eventually found satelites and worked for my journey to work.
Once found it seems to work as before, it is just the initial 'locking' !

A tip is to obtain a satelite fix before you get moving. This normally takes approx 1minute but can depend on the receiver that you are using. Try and do this where you have a clear view of the sky (not in your garage for example). It is much harder to get a signal lock if you are driving around.
If that does not work, try moving your receiver. Depending on your windscreen type, it could be blocking some of the signal. _________________ -------------------------------------------------------

In normal circumstances that is just what I do, try and get a lock before starting off.
The Holux is always put on the dash with a clear 'view' up.
It is not finding satellites for 10 minutes sometimes.
I would have thought that it would either work or not, not this kind of 'go slow'

I always get a fix from my Holux GPSlim before switching on TomTom - then TomTom usually locks on within a few seconds. On the rare occasions when it does not, I exit TomTom, click on Bluetooth and select GPSlim and click connect. Then open TomTom again and it invariably finds the signal.
If your BT receiver is taking 10 minutes to get a fix, it is likely that the battery which keeps the satellite data in memory has failed, so you are doing a first time start every time you switch on

Thanks for everyones input.
The Holux has stopped working alltogether now, just brief LED flashes and glows when the button is pressed.
Contacted the supplier and tomorrow it is on its way back to them.
Back to paper maps for while!

This also happened to me. From a few months ago, it started to take a good ten minutes to lock on position.
It normally finds 2 satellites, but takes an age to find more to allow for position lock.
Any ideas?
Thks,

This is an interesting topic. I have the same issue. (TTN6, & TT BT GPS). When you start TTN6 you get the initial "No GPS" then "Waiting for a valid GPS signal". At that point if you go into the view GPS page, you can see that there are several grey bars moving up and down a little. Surely this is an indication that the GPS unit has seen some satellites and is getting signals? Why then does it take a variable period of time before the bars go black and the Lat/Long is shown? Is this a misunderstanding of how GPS system work? (I bet it is - please, someone explain?). |

The bars moving up and down whilst being gray-coloured typically means that your GPS-receiver is getting a signal, but the SNR is too skewed (signal too weak to properly download and/or verify ephemeris data). Usually, stepping outside (which is b**gg*r all in this weather. :-)) with a clear view of the sky alleviates this.
If I'm incorrect, someone will correct me. I'm sure. :-) |

Have a look at THIS. Perhaps it will explain a bit better than I can.
The Grey/Blue Bar Graphs of the GPS Screen represents when a GPS Fix is not present (Grey), because not enough information has been aquired, and Blue when there is a definite fix.
This is possible with quite a wide range of SNR, but the fix time is quicker the higher the Ratio, due to less noise corrupting the data, which would require more aquisition time. _________________ Richard

Well thanks to both Silva101 and Oldboy. I certainly have all the info to answer my question! I like Silva101's version - grey bars mean gps has got something but not good enough for a fix. Oldboy, your reference is extremely comprehensive, and definitely beyond my comprehension, but there you go, now you know why my nickname is bewildered! Mind you, I bet a lot of people wonder why the grey bars don't mean that the gps is ready - I've seen a lot of people ask "why doesn't tomtom connect to the gps - the gps seem to be working fine" or something similar.
I'm now using the suggestion that I should let the gps unit get a fix FIRST (green flashing light) before I even try to connect tomtom. THis looks to be very promising. I've never waited 30 seconds or so before trying to connect tomtom so maybe that's the answer :D
Thanks again....the virtual beer is virtually here |
