Hello I have just got a Tom tom 500, its second hand though but I know where it came from and is only 4 months old .

Now it has App 5.420 and I joined dup on the tomtom site. I download the "home" software, this updates the device (apparently).

It come up and says there is an update available, but when I install this update App 6.150. The TT will freeze and not boot up, all I get is the splash screen.

Do I need to restore to the original back up that this person made, before he uploaded POIs and voices to the larger SD card its a 512mb.

I presume this newer application is needed ??? or should I not bother...Just I read that this allows more data and better pois lists ??

thanks for any help.

Its ok found the problem.Seems you can't use the custom voices for the speed cameras on the new version. Removed all them and it works fine now, only you now have less POi's you can install yourself on the card.

Think I wont bother with this newer version

You can use custom voices. Think I recall users having to remove them before update and then adding again after. You'll need file for the correct SW version.

Not sure what you mean about POI's under 6.xx you should be able to have 99.

One issue you might encounter is that the original SD card is likley to be too small to do the update sucessfully.

6.xx adds a few bits and pieces, i.e. you can have pin at startup, you can do route planning on the PC when TT is connected, good backup routine in HOME etc.

I've noticed slight better sat lock performance since upgrade, some other users have reported this too.

Mmmmmmm well I put about 20 POI file in and only the speed camers and a few others show up, though is you browse the TT files dirct from the pc (not using teh home ) its shows all the poi files in with the rest.... maybe I am doing it wrong??

what I did was get the poi's in TomTom Binary OV2 format.

Copy these files along with the BMP file of same name into the map folder of the tom tom.

I presume this is correct??

The pre-installed poi.dat set is counted as one database, so you should have 99 left (max is 100).

Can't imagine why this should be so I've just checked and I've 37 poi's inc speed cam and all show both in Home and on my 500.

The process you've used should be OK.
