My wife has just treated me to the C710 as a birthday gift so I felt it would be useful to join a forum and meet folks who have had a lot of experience with satnavs. Now I'm beginning to discover just how difficult it is to come to terms with my new gadget I feel more help is needed to convince me I'm not going stark raving bonkers ... I cannot help thinking the manual needs re-writing, I just can't make head nor tail of it.

I have tried to make contact with Mitac via e-mails but, as I note with other users, they either don't understand the English language or they are just plain rude, they certainly don't reply! I'm a pensioner and can't afford to phone them at those rates. So please, can someone explain a few things so that I can get up and running with this thing.

1. How do I update information such as speed cameras and PIO's?

2. Do I have the option of downloading updates to maps?

3. How can I change the dowdy voice to something more cheerful and relaxing?

4. How do I create a communication between my PC and my C710?

This is just a start but if anyone can help I would be very grateful.

Howdy and welcome to the 'Love & Hate' mio club Driving

1. How do I update information such as speed cameras and PIO's?

about PIO's I have resigned to my fate, so go ahead with what you already have. Maybe some 'guru' here will have more to say on that.
& about speed cams :- go to the site [http://www.mio-tech.be/mioclub/index.php?access=no&accesscheck=%2Fmioclub%2Fspeedcams%2Findex.php]
and 1st register your device there. Once done you will get entry to [http://www.mio-tech.be/mioclub/two.php ], here go for the topic "Synchronize speedcams on my device" & from the next page install the software where it says:-

Latest MioSync:
MioSync v1.2 (1.1 Mb)

once this is installed, you can connect the device with your usb cable to your PC. [and the USB driver is located in the "WCEUSB Driver" folder with the files 'WCEUSBSH.inf' and 'WCEUSBSH.SYS'.
Just let windows search for the drivers itself, and at one point just point windows to the above folder.]

once all is set, start the 'MioSync' prog from your PC--right click the icon on the task bar--Synchronise.

2. Do I have the option of downloading updates to maps?

Ans:- apart from the map that you already have rec'd in the box[dvd] , afaik there are no other present updates. However, once again, maybe some 'guru' here may proove me wrong Stop!

3. How can I change the dowdy voice to something more cheerful and relaxing?

Ans:- go through the settings, American 'attitude' voice = 'Jason' and Commanding officer voice = 'Mr Thomas'. More default choices , you do not have [ for english language] & do see the workaround provided by 'palexr' on my 1st day sores at the thread [http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=44303] , also on in this forum.

4. How do I create a communication between my PC and my C710?
Ans :- I think I have already answered that above.

This is just a start but if anyone can help I would be very grateful.[/quote]

Hope this helps. This is good forum so be here for sometime and read other's tales too. & you will soon start to Love & also hate the mio c710.

Just my two cents

Thanks miomio, I'll do my best to follow up on your suggestions but please, can anyone else make a contribution to this thread?

More on English (British) voices, preferably female if that can be arranged, would at least help get rid of plum-in-the mouth Thomas!

Hi freddie34

Here is a link to a thread which describes how to get a UK female voice

http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=43614&highlight=phillipa

You will need to purchase a bluetooth dongle (v1.2 or better 2). Unless your PC already has it.

Download the UK Female voice (link in the thread above towards the bottom).
Load and launch bluetooth on your pc
Then you need to switch bluetooth on on your mio
pair the devices
Look for miomap/voices/ and copy the zip file into it (don't unzip it)

I then had to sof reset the mio.

Use the the trick to keep the voice UK and you should off. I'm not sure if I don't prefer Thomas after a while though.

Thomas has a really sexy voice. I'd turn left in fifty yards for him any time.Laughing

But, unless I'm being misled by your alias, you're a lady! I'm a 70+ male pensioner but still find a female voice more attractive (well, some at least)!!

Hi palexr,

Will this affect the Mio warranty in any way?

http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=43614&highlight=phillipa

You will need to purchase a bluetooth dongle (v1.2 or better 2). Unless your PC already has it.

The one I have is 1.1, will this not work?

Download the UK Female voice (link in the thread above towards the bottom).

pair the devices

Does the Mio need to be connected to the PC via the supplied USB cable for this?

Look for miomap/voices/ and copy the zip file into it (don't unzip it)

I then had to sof reset the mio.

How do you soft reset the Mio?

Use the the trick to keep the voice UK and you should off. I'm not sure if I don't prefer Thomas after a while though.

Will I lose Thomas by doing this (just in case I come to the same conclusion)?

I'm not quite getting the hang of this ... I seem to have problems with 'quotes' in that my replies get mixed up with the original ... see palexr for example!

I've reached this stage but when asked for the passkey I've no idea what this is about ... how do I link the Mio with my PC?

Freddie34

The passkey is whatever you decide it to be. It is effectively asking you to set a password, this can be numeric, alphanumeric or alphabetic. Once you set it on your PC the mio will jump to a keyboard entry screen asking you to enter the same password. Once that is done the two devices will be able to see each other and "talk".

On your earlier questions.

I don't honestly know what the warranty position is. I'd suggest trying to remove the file if it looks like it is all going to go wrong.

Adding Phillipa is done via bluetooth not the usb cable. And, no, you will not lose Thomas (at least I haven't).

Not sure if it can be done via bluetooth 1.1 though. The advise on these threads is that it has to be 1.2. Search the threads for more info.

A soft reset is inserting a paperclip or pin in the small hole on the bottom left of the unit. Not the "on-off" mind, that is a hard reset - I think.

OK palexr, after a long drawn-out struggle with the communication link between my PC and the Mio and much reading of the manual, I have at last achieved the desired result, but with one exception ... despite soft-resetting the Mio, I still get the American voice!

I know I can change it back to Philippa but why does it default to Jason? Is there any way he can be deleted from the Mio ... his voice grates on me, a bit like most of the adverts we keep hearing on the radio these days! Confused Incidentally, I quite like Philippa but if my wife takes over the driving anytime, I guess we'll have to change back to Thomas! Rolling Eyes

Yes, this is a little peculiarity of the mio. To keep your deired voice you will need to go into the language setting of miomap and change the Program language to a foreign one you unerstand (for me french). When you select the foreign Program language the mio tells you it will reboot. Once it has rebooted into the foreign go back to the langiage selections and change the Program language back to UK - et voila! After this Jason won't come back.

I have now gone one better ... I've purchased a Belkin dongle V.2 and the software has given me more power over the voice files on Mio. As a result I have been able to delete the Jason file as I have no intention of using it again! However, there is still this problem from time to time where I cannot get the passkey sorted. I get the impression there should be a unique one somewhere in the Mio package but I've not comeacross it yet ... do you have any other suggestions or perhaps I'm just not grasping something Question

I don't think there is a set one on the mio. I keep getting asked for a passkey as well, I just type whatever in each time - seems to work. Wouldn't worry about it too much.
