Hi,

I currently own a Garmin eTrex. I bought it primarily because I do a lot of travel and landscape photography. I'm very unhappy with its performance. It takes forever for it to lock into satellites. Many a times, it just doesn't.

Also, I'd be standing at a spot for 10 minutes and data would be constantly changing i.e. location and altitude. Obviously, it's not sensitive enough.

I want to replace it with a new handheld GPS. Here's what I'm looking for:

1. Small and light
2. Very accurate
3. Fast to connect to satellites
4. Very sensitive i.e. eTrex is very moody. Unless, I'm standing on top of a mountain, it keeps asking me if I'm indoors.
5. Maps eTrex doesn't have maps. I think it's very useful to have them even if they're not details. Just being able to see roads is good enough.

Without breaking the bank account, what is my best option?

That may be because most of us (but not all, Lutz) are based in the UK rather than the USA. We simply do not know what is available in your market both in the way of devices of the type you want (off-road) or maps for them.

Sorry .............

Garmin are the best - you must have a duff Etrex or you are exceptionally demanding. The new range Garmins use SiRFstart III - very sensitive. I would go for the latest 60C or 60Cx. Does all you want except make hot coffee - you would not be disappointed.
Unfortunatly you can't have all you want without breaking the bank account, which the 60 series does quite nicely. At a minimum, make sure you get a unit with a SiRF III reciever.
