|
|
I've just seen that there is a new version of the software for the Nuvi - version 3.60 but I don't understand what several of the changes actually mean! Can anyone explain what is meant by any of:
* Added support for enterprise tracking
What is "enterprise tracking"?
* Added support for MPC maps
What are MPC maps?
* Added support for Safety Cameras
Hasn't the Nuvi always supported safety cameras?
* Changed to make GUPDATE.GCD file update procedure consistent with other GARMIN products
What is the GUPDATE.GCD file update procedure? |

Yep rob500, I've just came across this same update at the Garmin site to.
I came here to let everyone else know of it's existance but you beat me to it 8) .
I also have the same questions. It's a strange list of changes, hope someone on this site may shed some light. I for one will not be updating till I know whats it all about. Especally concerned about the Safty Camera support, and hope this is not an attempt to restrict the data we can load from 3rd parties |

Rob500 wrote: | What is "enterprise tracking"? | It allows large corporates to locate the vehicle based on feedback from the GPS unit. How this is achieved I don't know, as the GPS has no transmission capabilities.

Quote: | Hasn't the Nuvi always supported safety cameras? | Yes, but this new option allows you configure how many alerts you get for cameras, single tone, overspeed, or continuous directly on the unit (as I understand it).
Quote: | What is the GUPDATE.GCD file update procedure? | It's the procedure for updating the firmware to a new version (like this new software version). This simply brings the method used on the Nuvi to be the same as every other Garmin GPS - no difference to you, but I guess it makes it easier for Garmin support to diagnose problems. |

What is interesting about the Speed Camera part though is that this implies there is something to come from Garmin on this. As there are now 2 options under prox points alerts, Custom POIs and Garmin Safety Cameras. Seeing as speed camera locations before came under custom pois and still are I guess, what exactly are "Garmin" Safety cameras? |

1. It's to separate them out from normal Custom POIs, and a new version of POI Loader is due soon which will put them into the other "folder".
2. They are planning to launch their own subscription service.
Personally, based on what they've done so far, I'd head for 1. |

Just to confirm for everyone (as I have downloaded v3.60 onto my 350), the safety camera support changes are as swing mentioned i.e. more options for managing proximity alarms. You can still use custom POI downloads (such as the pocketgpsworld ones - mine work fine with the new version), but you have more control over continuous/single tones etc.
Just a word of warning though (to avoid anyone else spending 30 minutes in a queue waiting to speak to garmin tech support!), the menu structure for proximity alarms has changed in the new version. Instead of being in Settings-System-Proximity Alarms, it's now a section on its own within 'Settings' - scroll down it's called 'Proximity Points' and this is where you can set single/continuous/overspeed.
My guess on 'Garmin Safety Cameras' is that they'll launch their own service (doesn't seem to matter though, you can deselect the Garmin safety cameras option on the screen and just continue to use custom poi's).
Hope this helps. |

Well, I've just installed the 3v60 update on my Nüvi300 and wished I hadn't!
Took it on a 70mile trip and everything works fine except for the Voice which:-
(a) Is much quieter than it used to be.
(b) Suddenly goes off for up to 10minutes or more at a time.
(c) Is very distorted and clipped.
(d) Misses bits of the instruction. (For instance..."Turn left, then..." followed by nothing else! Or, "....keep (long pause) left".
I am now reverting back to the previous version and then trying another download in the hope that it was a corrupted download, but why a corrupted download should only affect the voice I don't know.
Anybody else had any problems?

Sorry but I've been to that site and can't see any reference to safety cameras. Is there a particular page within the site that I should look at or did something else make you think Garmin are going to launch their own camera file(s)? |

3.60 - WELL IT'S OK BY ME.
Sound levels seem no different and all else seems ok.
BUT - it seems as though traffic info sceen is more up front than before.
You get a large coloured bar across the screen if you click on the traffic hold up bars and the info seems in a clearer layout. Maybe I've gone mad but I'm sure it's better than before |

The bit on the page I provided the link for that says:
"Soon, you can come to myGarmin to purchase certain products and accessories or subscribe to Garmin Online services for traffic options, custom points of interest (POI) downloads such as safety cameras, customized vehicle icons and more."
This also then suggests that customized vehicle icons will be available to purchase, rather than being free as they are currently.
The "and more" I would hazard a guess at being custom voices a la TomTom, but it is just a guess.

Sorry, on looking again, so it does - I must have missed it when I first looked. I think I was expecting a menu option.
Very interesting - thanks for pointing it out. |

I wonder where they will be getting the safety camera data from. It is quite a bit more expensive than here so would have to be very good to make it worth the extra cost. |
