i have just bought a navman icn750 satnav system. i subscribed to this website after contacting navman and they recommended it to me. i do as per instructions, but it downloads the file as an csv file not an asc file. i have absolutely no idea what i'm doing i'm an absolute beginnger can someone tell me what i'm doing wrong. i check to find out whether my navman is supported and it goes to navman 650 only yet on the page with the instructions it says icn 7 series.

thanks kim hood

When you say it downloads as a .csv file, is that because it opens with, for instance, Excel or do the files within the downloaded zipfile actually have .csv extensions as opposed to .asc ones?

The iCN7xx range certainly is supported so we will provide all the help we can to get you up and running.

hi there tim
when you go into the smartst and it tells you that you have to click map and POI editor, then click file open point to folder, there is no file to point to and when you try to get all files the only thing there is .csv files nothing else just .csv.

and it will not find the file anywhere on the computer.

I take it that you chose Navman as your GPS device. Which subchoice did you make out of Single file, consolidated by type and 24 file? Can you tell me the name of the file you've downloaded from this site? It comes in zip format so needs unzipping before it can be used.

If you downloaded a Navman compatible file it should definitely be in .asc format.

i have tried all of the options in the subchoice and all are the same and when i said previously that you go to file open, it will only open a text file nothing else.

But can you humour me, please? Have you unzipped the zipfile? Can you explore the zipfile in Windows Explorer?

ON THE INSTRUCTIONS WE GOT FROM THE POCKET GPS SITE, IT SAYS DOWNLOAD THE FILE WHICH WE DID, WE'VE UNZIPPED IT INTO A FOLDER WHICH GIVES US 13 FILES. WHICH INCLUDES SOME ASC FILES IT SAYS THEN OPEN UP SMARTST AND CONNECT THE NAVMAN VIA USB, ACTIVE SYNC IS RUNNING AND IT CONNECTS TO THE MACHINE FINE. IT THEN SAYS GO TO MAP ON THE MENU AND POI AND THAT OPENS UP THE POI EDITOR WINDOW.

THEN IT SAYS GO TO THE MENU BAR AGAIN AND SELECT FILE OPEN OUR MENU BAR DOESN'T HAVE A FILE OPEN ONLY OPEN TEXT FILE. IT THEN SAYS SELECT THE FOLDER WERE YOU THE FILES AND IT WILL LIST THEM ON THE SCREEN. BUT ON OUR POI EDITOR WHEN WE OPEN TEXT FILE AND LOOK AT THE 2 BOTTOM BOXES THE TOP ONE WHERE YOU ENTER YOUR FILE NAME AND THE BOTTOM ONE WHERE YOU SELECT THE TYPE OF FILE YOU WANT TO OPEN. THE EXTENSION IT DEFAULTS TO IS .CSV AND WHEN YOU CLICK THE RIGHT ARROW TO CHANGE THE CHOICE OF FILE EXTENSIONS THERE AREN'Y ANY, THE ONLY FILES IT WILL LOOK AT ARE .CSV FILES AND NONE OF THE FILES WE HAVE DOWNLOADED AND UNZIPPED FROM GPS WORLD HAVE A .CSV EXTENSION.

SO ALL WE GET IS AN EMPTY SCREEN.

SORRY FOR THE CAPS HUBBY DID IT WITHOUT MY KNOWLEDGE AND I WASN'T GOING ALL THE WAY BACK TO THE TOP AND STARTING AGAIN.

No worries about the caps; took me a while to read it, though. So, when you open POIEditor you navigate to the unzipped .asc files but can't see them. Is that right? On my version of POIEditor, the default is (*.*) which shows a'' files.

I'm afraid I'm puzzled as to why yours is different.

I am part of PocketGPSWorld (sort of). The issue you have is with Navman, not PGPSW. One thing you can do though, is to use Windows Explorer to change the file extensions from .asc to .csv. This will at least allow you to import them using POIEditor.

The files are text files and changing the extension doesn't alter the actual data in any way.

I understand the problem you are having as I too found this with my icn750. The download is a file.csv and the navman software will only accept files with file.acs extentions. The fix is to change the file extention from .csv to .acs

short:- left click on the file once to highlight it then again to highlight only the text and a flashing curser. Now just rename the file to whatever.acs.
