Entering data in to a handheld unit?

I'm totally new so I'll learn as I go. I want to buy the most for my money and learn to use the features as my knowledge matures. I foresee using the unit for hiking, biking, sailing, car travel with turn by turn directions, and possibally, but not likely, glider flying. (I have the Ms Streets & Tips + GPS for use with my car. It worsk fine, but is bulky and definately can't be used for biking or hiking.)

I looked at the Garmin 76csx because of its bright display, large memory, mapping capability, and wealth of other features. After downloading the instruction manuel, if appears that entering data like an address for use with the optional driving maps is a serious pain unless the ediitig is done at home on a computer. A handheld with large touch screen would be nice, but this seems to be available only on the larger car units that arent't very portable.

Finally to my question. Is there a handheld/waterproof unilt that is similar to the Garmin unit that can connected to a PDA for editing and entering information? (The reviews of the PDA's with GPS indicates that the are not nearly as good or as rugged as the the units like the hand held Garmin 76csx.)
