I am in the market to upgrade my current GPS unit which is a Garmin 45 XL which has the older technology for acquiring satellites & sometimes just couldn't lock on in thick woods. This web site is very good. Lot's of info. But I am a bit overwhelmed while reviewing all the details of the different handhelds available. I think I could limit my choices to either another Garmin or a Magellan product. It's primary use would be for hunting the western states of the U.S. and sometimes using it in my boat in the upper midwest & southern Canada. I really don't know how much memory one should consider for topo mapping. Is 20 meg enough for an area 30 x 50 miles square? In your opinion which is the better topo software- Garmin's or Magellan's? I welcome all replies & recommendations. Thanks in advance!
Don

Don, you'll love the newer GPS Receivers then. If you went with something like the GPSMap76/S or the Magellan Meridian range all have Quad Helix antennas and bring in good signal, so you won't go far wrong there.

20 meg would be best advised, personally for map support I'm starting to sway to Magellan Meridian's, primarily because they use Secure Digital (SD) cards, and in theory the sky is the limit, certainly you can pick up cheap 256mb SD cards, and use these in the Magellan and this would give you killer support for loading of maps. I haven't tried any topo maps as there aren't any available yet for the UK, but I have tried the mapping support for both Garmin and Magellan and they are both good. If you wanted to not go the SD card route, than I'd recommend 20 to 24 meg for a dedicated receiver. Get one which supports as much memory as possible for the price, because you know you're going to use it.
