Hello! newbie here, but I have previously owned Magellan and Garmin etrex hand held units.

I have now acquired a Garmin i3, and am pretty impressed so far. However, I have noticed that when I enter some postcodes, and then bring up the Show Map option, the unit will bring the map up, and then almost immediately power itself off. This happens with certain postcodes only, and also with or without satellites being tracked. A sample of postcodes where this happens is B92 8NW and HD1 2NF.

Please could someone try these postcodes for me, as I don't want to take the unit back to the shop and find out its my fault!

Cheers in advance
Mark

Yes, and it has new batteries. Other postcodes work fine, I can scroll in and out of the displayed map, and the unit does not shut itself down. The two postcodes I gave as an example lead to the unit almost immediatly shutting down, after briefly displaying a map.

I should add that the unit is on version 2.60 (bought new from Halfords last week).

Should I upgrade the software?

welcome strang, i'm just up the road in 'sunny' thornton!

anyway, firmware 2.9 is the latest - have you tried it with that yet? an added bonus is that you don't need the space in the postcode, however, i'm at work so can't try out the postcodes yet

Hi - and thanks for all the help so far! Errr, if I was to upgrade the software, is there a way of resetting the unit's defaults back to how it left the factory? reason for asking is that if I do have to take it back to Halfwits, they may question my software versions.....

Cheers as always

I doubt very much whether they would notice, looking at the box that mine came in, I cant see anywhere that states what firmware was loaded when it left the factory.

here's your 2 postcodes

Leave the software as it is print off this message take with you to Halfords and demo the I3 and its failure to locate the postcodes while on other units no problem exists.

If you wish all software revisions are available so going back / forward is not a problem.

Using software Beta 2.82 Thumbs Up at this end.

Now swapped unit for a new one at Halfords and all is working OK now! Chap in Halfords who reckoned to know a bit about these units said he had never come across the problem before.

Thanks to all for the help.

PS Still on version 2.60 - what would be best to upgrade to please?
