My Personal Enigma

Could anyone explain why when I first start TomTom I notice under GPS Status W 0.0000 - S 0.0000 but once I have lock it changes to, for example, E 0.599 - N 51.372.

I realise that both Greenwich and the equator are 0.0000 and in the above example position I would be North of the equator and East of Greenwich i.e Rainham, Kent. No problem there.

However, my personal enigma is, why would my Sat Nav always start by showing West - South? Logically I would have thought units destined for Europe would have had a default of East - North or West - North. Why the South?

Even more reason when I read on the TomTom site 'The company was founded in 1991 in Amsterdam, and has grown to supply a market that spreads across the whole of Europe and North and Central America'.

Could it be just mine or is it standard across the board?

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

GPS was not invented in Europe, mind you. That's for the W part. As for the S - I am at loss.
