Hi,
I have recently received a Haicom HI-303MMF GPS Receiver and noticed that the Factory Settings for the NMEA strings that are output does not include the VTG string. I am developing an application in Embedded Visual C++ and using serial communications to recieve the GPS NMEA data. I need the VTG string however and am not sure of the commands that can be used to enable it.
If someone could please help me by providing these commands or a link to where they can be found I would be very appreciative. So far the Haicom manual has proven to be a waste of time regarding this issue.
Thanks in Advance

Use standard SiRF configuration tools like WinFast Navigator. The Pocket PC configuration application included on the CD-ROM allows you to make some changes, but it doesn't give you that fine a control over NMEA sentences output.
You have to be using the HI-303MMF in CompactFlash mode for any configuration to work - in mouse mode there's no serial input.
This article shows the use of WinFast Navigator on the Pocket PC - the Commands -> NMEA screen allows you to choose the NMEA sentences output and the period of time (in seconds) between outputs.

Hey David,
Thanks for the input but I have already tried the WinFast Navigator. It works fine but I'd really like to be able to enable the NMEA VTG string from a Serial port connection if possible. The potential users of the application will not know how to configure the NMEA output so I would like my application to make sure it is enabled even though the likleyhood that the setting will be changed is very minute.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

In that case, you will have to modify the hardware. As it stands, there is no data input when using a serial cable. My understanding is that this is to prevent damage to the hardware, as there's no way of disconnecting the CompactFlash UART from the GPS chipset's serial input when a cable is inserted.
If you don't intend to use the CompactFlash port, I suggest you buy a SiRF II based GPS mouse such as a Leadtek 9532, which does have a serial input via a cable. It's also cheaper than a HI-303MMF.
David (going from what I understand here, not from first hand knowledge - I'm not prepared to break the warranty seal on my HI-303MMF) |

Interestingly, a look at the Haicom site today shows the HI-303E. It looks identical to the HI-303MMF (colour and model number excepted), and the manual rubbishes my initial thought that it was a HI-303MMF without the mouse mode option.
I wonder if this is a HI-303MMF with a serial input in mouse mode - but that is only a guess. At the moment, I have no idea what the differences between the two models are.
