Non powered GPS (cable) for O2 XDA

Hi,

I am looking for a GPS solution for my O2 XDA. One problem I am facing is that this morning I was informed that the O2 XDA which uses a serial GPS, must have a powered cable since the O2 won't power the GPS reciever. Is this correct? Is there some way around this?

Sorry if I've posted this in the wrong forum, but I was thinking cables when I was looking at the solution.

What you normally get is a Y cable. Coming from the cigarette lighter socket, it provides both the XDA and the serial receiver with power. Plus, it establishes the data connection between the XDA and the receiver. It is very uncommon to power the serial receiver separately (though it should be possible)

Im hoping that lbendlin and Pc-Mobile are about as you seem to know a bit about this Y cable thing.

My problem is

from reading your posts I don’t think the cable I was sold

All I bought was a cable that had PS2 on one end and mini USB on the other.
Not the optional power bit.

(I guess I miss read the advert) I thought I could turn the end of my ps2 rikaline into a mini usb (which fits in my mda compact pda) and get it to work on tomtoms. It works fine on my laptop with a ps2 to full sized usb adaptor. I though you could do the same thing on a pocket pc!

Have I been wasting my time with this cable?

Would a powered Y adaptor (cigarlighter/ps2/mini usb) work? Will it let me hook up my MDA compact with my rikaline 6010? Do they have y adaptors that have mini usb?

Do mini usb ports on pocket pc's NOT give out power, like full sized USB ports?

Firstly, the Pocket PC is a USB client, not a USB host. You are trying to connect two USB clients together - this won't work unless you have a bridge (a bump in the cable with some USB Host circuitry)

The PDA is most likely not powerful enough to feed the GPS, you will need a separate power supply.

I do not know what are the cables concerned but one thing I can confirm:

Mini XDA can only use BT GPS, it is not possible to connect any GPS via cable, whatever GPS/cable it is.

That is interesting.
I have heard of one for Tungsten E, which is also listed there, but never one for PPC.

There is only a picture but no description so I cannot make more comments.

As with the Kirrio solution for Tungsten E, I did not think there is enough market to warrant such developement and I think such "smart cable" would not find many takers even if it works.

That is because Many PDAs (even the budget ones) now almost inevitably have BT as standard and BT GPS are getting cheaper and cheaper.

So BT is the way to go particularly for PDAs without a serial port like Mini XDA.
