Three times now my Ipaq has ‘blanked out’ on me.
By this I mean that I have taken it from its charger, fully charged, left it in the leather wallet attached to my belt, and 2 or 3 hours later it refuses to ‘light up’ again.
I assume because of low battery, (but without it working, that is only a guess).

It will not accept a soft reset. In fact only removing the battery will allow it to work again …. With all the programs lost and needing reloading.

Has anyone else encountered this?
Has any one a suggestion about recovering without battery removal?

Would it be worth doing a soft reset each time I put it in its wallet.
Not a satisfactory solution, I know, but perhaps better than having a non-working SatNav in a strange place and no Navigator to get you home … and who uses maps now?

Are you turning it fully off or inadvertently put it in a suspend state? only press and release the power button momenteraly, if you hold it for more than second it will turn off the back light, and appear to be off but it is still running - just a thought, cos its caught me out once or twice - mike

WOW .... that is really interesting.

I did not know that! It must be the reason. Thank you.

I shall play with that little button to understand what effect the long and the fast presses are.

Is there any indication that it is in suspended mode?

thanks

Just a further thought.

I have set the Ipaq up to be able to use the battery for 72 hours in suspended mode, whereas I notice this inability to wake it up after only an hour or so.

Is there an alternative way of reseting the device (apart from sticking the stlus up its bottom) which will bring it back to life without removing the barrey, and thus all the stuff in memory?

thanks again

Hope i can help

1) Make sure that you close all programs off before you hit the power button (click on itask and close all or click on start, settings, system, memory running programs).

2) PDA's don’t physically turn off, they go into hibernate mode and if any program is running it can cause the PDA lock up and if you have it in your pocket for a while you will find that the PDA with hard reset and you will loose all your data. PDA's don’t have hard drives and the data is held on volatile memory, if the battery runs out then your data will be lost.

There are a number of programs out there to help you use your PDA better, like battery pack etc will give you easy shortcuts etc.

You might also want to check the Rom image on the iPAQ

How to check your ROM revision & update
On the PDA click on: Start, settings, system, asset viewer, version and check the ROM Revision e.g. 1.00.03 ENG You can update your ROM direct from HP web site http://welcome.hp.com/country/us/en/support.html Tick the Download drivers and software And enter your model number 5550. This will then take you to the download section for your IPAQ. The BIOS section is what you want to be downloading in order to update the ROM. Once you download the file it is all self explanatory

This is a handy prog for closing down running programs. http://www.freewareppc.com/utilities/wisbaradvance.shtml

Sprite Backup is also a must have in case you loose al your data again .all you do is backup your PPC and save it as a self restoring exe file on your storage card .and you recover your PPC to how it was before the reset

Oddsock.

Thank you fpor putting me onto Sprite Backup.

I am absolutely gob-smacked with it.

I backed up.
I removed the battery for 10 mins
I put the battery back.
Within 30 seconds I had a fully working PDA, with all my volatile memory settings etc 100% perfect. You would not know that the battery had been taken out.

The other features are nice as ewell .... but that backup is stupendous. Well worth 30 dollars in peace of mind alone.

Thanks again ... wonderful thing this forum!
