I certainly enjoy the configurability of TTN5.1 after using CoPilot, and generally find it a much better product. Perhaps that's why it's the market leader!

However, I do miss CoPilot's ability to plan trips on the desktop PC an then downloading them to the Mitac.

Does anyone know of a facility either to import CoPilots .trp files into TTN5.1, or alternatively MS Autoroute .axe journey files?

Perhaps there is some other whizzy little program out there that I'm not aware of.

Geoff.

yes, there are programs out there that can product the ITN format. You can also do it yourself, with a little Excel macro etc.

Yes my POIConverter program http://rjdavies.users.btopenworld.com/html/poiconverter.html will do it.

Oldie, I had tried the latest version of POI converter, but on a simple Autoroute file such as Chiswick to Brighton (with no pushpins) I get the following error message:

Error: The ST2GPX utility failed to produce the file st2gpx.tmp

Does your program need pushpins for start and finish of route to work?

Thanks.

As I had not tried one of my ITN files with TTN5 I created a route prior to posting my message. Normally I would have created a route using pushpins but in this test I did not - and it worked for me :D

Did you close the AutoRoute map file? POIConverter cannot read the data in the AXE file unless you do. Also keep the map file name simple - sometimes AutoRoute inserts commas in the file name.

Richard,

I think I've got it. I did a simple route: Chiswick, Arundel, Worthing, Brighton. I had to add (and name) pushpins to each of those four places in Autoroute for your program to generate the OV2 file. Without pushpins no OV2 file was created.

I then new Brighton POI to an Itinerary, but had to select each of the points in the POI to the itinerary. Although I had named the pushpins in Autoroute, they appear as "Untitled" in the new Brighton POI.

Unless I'm doing something wrong, it's not as neat a solution as CoPilot desktop planning, but it does at least work.

Thanks for your help.

Geoff.

Geoff,

I have just tried the following which works in AR 2005.

Using chiswick > Find > OK then right-click in the Chiswick box and add to route as Start

arundel > Find > OK then right-click in the Arundel box and add as Stop

and so on to define the route and end point.

There is no need to get any directions for the route.

Finally save the map and exit AutoRoute.

Now start POIConverter and select the Route Button. Open the AR map file, which will read the route data from the AXE file, and save as a TomTom ITN file.

As you see I did not have to create pushpins and there was no need to create OV2 files.

Perhaps the bit that you missed in POIConverter was selecting the Route Buton.

Richard,

Yes, I had not realised that I had to click the "Route data" button in your program. Once I did that it all works like magic!

I'm really so pleased that I can now use Autoroute in favour of CoPilot for desktop planning.

Thanks again for your help, and for providing us with such a useful program.

Rgds,
Geoff.

I think that this is probably a feature that Tom Tom should include - after all, don't they claim that their product is platform independent? Presumably (to protect their revenue - which they seem to be keen to do) all they would need to do is remove or disable any GPS connection.

While I couldn't say with any certainty, I would have THOUGHT that using differrent products could cause problems where there were differences in the maps (there is a high degree of probability that the maps will not be identical - possibly not just differrent dates but even differrent companies!) what happens when a road is added/moved/closed on one application but not on the other.

While CoPilot has its problems, at least the desktop maps and the PDA maps are (presumably) identical since the PDA ones are generated from the desktop's data. Or, (to be pedantic) an accurrate subset of them, since the region on the PDA is resticted to whatever licence(s) you have.

neil01,

I agree with what you say, and, in a perfect world, TT would have a desktop module like CP.

However, given that it's an imperfect world I'm very happy to have regained a facility that I had thought was lost when I recently dumped CPL5 in favour of TTN5.

MS Autoroute seems to appear with a new version annually so one can only hope that the maps are updated each year too.

Geoff.

neil01 is certainly correct when he says that differences in the maps can cause problems. AutoRoute uses Navteq mapping whilst TomTom uses Tele Atlas. Personally I prefer to set up a route/itinerary using TomTom.

After transferring a route to TomTom it is best to review it and correct any detours that may have crept in due to mapping differences.

>Oldie

Would it be possible to modify the program to allow Route 66 route files (.rou) to be convertet to TT5 .int files?

Mogens,

Do you have the format of the .rou files?
