I've used a few POI files from the 'Points of Interest' section of this website and have found discrepancies with my system on some POIs.

I am converting the POIs to either GPX format (for Memory Map) or MLP format (for Mapopolis) using POIConverter.

Whilst some POIs are spot on, others are from 1 to 10 miles from where they should be, in random directions.

Is this likely to be a problem just with the original POI data (which is fair enough, I appreciate the time and effort people have gone to making these files available), or am I missing something in the conversion process?

Cheers

Chris

You will find that over a period of time there are changes, which means that some locations are not included, and some are included that no longer exist.

There is also the problem of how the data was obtained.

I've just compiled an Esso POI using the latest data from Esso, and some addresses, Postcodes and even names are wrong in there information. I had to assume that the phone number and opening hours were correct.

In my case I checked all the sources of addresses and names, etc. to get to a best bet with some of them. It took me 4 weeks, a lot of hours, and several comments at home, to reach the finished state.

Thanks Richard,

Some of the locations are showing as being out at sea, so I think (if it is not something I am doing wrong) it is more likely to be an error somewhere in the original data rather than a change in the location.

I guess my best option would be to create my own POI list (if I can get hold of the raw data) and then submit it here.

Cheers

Chris

POI that I create myself I keep on my own Webspace. I've only done 8 so far, mainly by request, but I think they are close but I obviously can't guarantee that, unless I've been there personally.

If you want to have a look you can find them at http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/oldboy/

There is also some I have produced on here The Vauxhall one was produced from data supplied by Vauxhall and even their database had errors in the addresses and postcodes that had to be corrected.
There is a commercial program I use that will find any address in the UK, by either giving the business name and town or postcode, but is expensive to buy.
If you have Autoroute that can be quite useful at locating places from an address input and if you go into tools, location sensor it will give you the latitude and longitude.
