It doesnt seem to be even able to find 'Westward Ho' in Devon...is the software really that bad that it cant even manage the job of a cheap road atlas...

I was looking for 'golf links road' Westward ho...no joy

Try looking for Golf Links Rd, without entering the area. You should get a long list of them to choose from. One of them is likely to be the one you want.
Keep in mind that the software is only as good as the map data. If what you enter does not match what the map data thinks it should be, it will not find a match. It's likely that Golf Links Rd is not in (according to TeleAtlas) Devon.
