I've got one of the old style silver TomTom Wireless GPS units. Does anyone know if it's easy to replace the battery, or does it need to go back to TomTom?

If you can do it yourself, does anyone know if there's a way of using a higher capacity battery? The 5 hour lifespan from a full charge seems pretty weak compared to even the cheaper units today that offer up to 20 hours.

Cheers.

All you have to do is unscrew two screws in the base and the unit comes apart. The battery is connected by a lead which plugs onto the circuit board. A new battery would just have to be plugged in.

The battery is a close fit and you would not get a larger battery inside. It is not just the battery power that is the issue here, these older chipsets consume more power than the modern SirfIII chipsets.

I do not know where you would get a new battery to fit.

Also how much are you prepared to spend on upgrading old technology, the performance of the new units (SirfIII with WAAS) is far better?

Thanks for the info. That's true, it may be more cost effective to get a new GPS unit. I just wanted see how much a new battery would be first. If it's really cheap compared to the price of a new unit, it may be worth just getting a new battery as the old TomTom GPS unit has served me fine so far.

Cheers.
