Hello gang.
New to the TomTom group. Just picked up a TomTom 300 from my local retailer (30 day trial :D ). But I just noticed that I could get a pocketpc and the Navigator for the same or less money. Just curious at to the Positives of the all in one unit (300) versus the PocketPC add on option.
Is there ANY difference in the functionality or useability between the two? (Does the all in one just flat out work better than the software solution).
Also any recommendations (if you think the PocketPC is the route to go) as to which pocket pc to grab.
Sorry..one more thing. I REALLY like the windshield mount that came with the 300. If PocketPC is recommended...is there a simular cradle that is as easy to put up and take down?

My own view is the TTGO is the one to get. Its a dedicated unit designed to do one job no external receiver to power and link to, not trying to be a "jack of all trades".
I suppose its down to personal choice or if you have a need for a ppc. But my experience with ppcs the more software you put on them the less reliable they become, although I know there are many tomtom navigator uses out there that are very happy with their setup.

If you need a pocket PC, then this might be the right solution. If you don't need a PDA for "PDA work", then you should avoid the hazzles and buy a GO.
The software in the "TomTom Navigator 5" package is virtually identical to the one in the GO, so are the maps. The voice instructions are much better with the big speaker on the GO then with the tiny piezo-thingy in the PDA. These instruments are not built to be heared in a noisy environment.
Sharing multiple applications on one system can lead to various troubles. Any Windows user knows about that and a PDA is even more critical than a notebook to keep everything running fine. If you need a "navigation system", go for a dedicated solution.
The separate bluetooth receiver for the PDA can be placed freely inside the car to find the best reciption, the GO might need an external antenna that must be wired somewhere in case you do not get good signal inside the car. That one is water proof and you can place it on the roof, something you should definitely avoid with the bluetooth receiver. On the other hand, the (TomTom) bluetooth receiver uses the modern SIrfStarIII chip which is much more sensitive then the one in the GO.
If you are hiking, and want to have a GPS with you, the PDA is the better solution. Easy to cary and a wide range of additional GPS related software available other than street-routing. The GO is a "streets only" navigation.
The wireless receiver has to be recharged regulary which might be a problem when you are on a long trip and battery runs low in the car. |
