I've been running TomTom Navigator 5 on an Ipaq 1945 for about a month, using the supplied TomTom wireless GPS receiver. My problem is that the receiver seems to take ages to lock onto a satellite signal. On average it probably takes around five minutes. When I'm in a rush, it drives me mad!!
Can anyone tell me if this is normal, or whether there may be a fault with the receiver. Is there any best practice to follow to make sure that a satellite figure is locked onto quickly?

Do you have a UV reflective or heated windscreen? These filter out the microwave signals from the NavSats.
Some car manufacturers actually have a small area behind the rear view mirror on the screen that is intended for phone/gps reception. My frien's Renault does - check with your car dealer...
As an experiment, with the receiver in the car, look at the signal graph, then put the receiver (Rx) outside on the roof of the car. If there is a goodly increase in signal strength, the odds on are that the windscreen is attenuating the signals getting to the receiver.
If this is the case, 4 work-arounds that could be tried:
1) Try mountingthe Rx behind the rear view with the hopes that your screen has a 'sweet spot'.
2) Try placing the receiver on the back shelf and get signals that way. The heated rear screen has the elements wider apart and is less attenuating of the signals than a heated front screen.
3) If viable, put the Rx on the roof. (Consider the security aspect.)
4) If the above fail, you can get a GPS Re-Radiator. This is a GPS receiver with a very low power transmitter. You locate the receiver in a good spot and place the transmitter antenna (re-radiator aerial) very near to your gps Rx.
Just a thought, You are running it from the car battery? (IE plugged in the ciggy lighter socket etc) and that the car battery is OK - low voltage could reduce the performance...
If you have a clear view of the sky (no urban canyons) and taking it out of the car does not improve matters, then you may have a case of returning it for a new one...

The problems happen even when the receiver has just been charged, so I don't think it's a battery issue, and the car battery I'm charging from is relatively new.
I checked that my car didn't have a heat reflective windscreen before I bought the system, but just in case I'll try your suggestion tomorrow of putting it on the roof and seeing what difference it makes to the signal strength. Hope it works!
