Hi...my first visit..this seems like a great site.
Anyway...
I have a Compaq 3950, which I am only starting to get to grips with. It was only after getting it that I heard about the Navman sleeve, and this would be very useful. Before I take the plunge, I need to know if it will do what I need.
Im a forester in the north of England, and often have woods to visit for just a day. Many have no official names, so Im usually given an OS Grid Ref. It's simple enough to find the location on a map (I have the relevant Anquet CD roms), but then less easy to drive there without a mapreader on twisty country roads. Having a screen on the dash to help would be great, but does the software cope with that kind of detail in rural areas?
I've yet to get the hang of downloading from my PC to the PDA, but I'll cross that bridge when/if I come to it.

Norman,
From your job description I would have thought that an investment in Memory Map software with a set of local OS maps would be most useful.
You would have a 1:50,000 map on your PC and can locate and plan in comfort. OS ref. finding is a doddle.
You could then locate and mark the position on your Ipaq and view at required zoom level for navigation.
I suppose that if you really wanted to be guided by voice to your destination TomTom navigator would cope with narrow lanes but not forestry tracks.
The Navman sleeve may not be the best GPS kit for your purposes.Have a good look at the reviews before you buy. Most will work with MM software. _________________ PeterB, Kent, U.K.

Thanks for that, Peter.
Ok, I've done some browsing, and the fog is beginning to clear a little. Let's see if I've got this right...
First, I need Memory Map (Which version...CE or PC?) along with the relevant OS package, which I assume would make life easier than trying to use my existing Anquet maps.
Then I need a sleeve for my iPAQ 3950, of which Emtac appears to be the better choice.
Where does TomTom come into it? Is this just a similar thing to Memory Map, but with different functionality?
Oh, and I suppose I'll need an SD card. 128mb be enough?

You'll need Memory-Map for the PC which comes complete with the PocketPC application to which you upload the maps you need. Anquet maps may be just as good though?
TomTom makes an appearance because you could use this to navigate you to the forest track entrance, from here Memory Map or Anquet would then take over. Memory Map does not have any in built routing or navigation, you would have to plot routes manually on the PC, upload them to your PPC and then visually follow the route. Whilst this would be useful within a forest, for the open road, Tom Tom would be better as this will navigate you visually and by voice. _________________ Darren Griffin
