Just done mine too; but unsure how we will upgrade software. I read now that the maps will come on a cd, but I had originally understood that the software for the programme (as well as for the maps) would be coming on an SD card. Anyone clearer than me on this (and that should include almost everyone!)? |

If you read the upgrade details on their web site, it says the new program is also on the CDs

TomTom have said that a FREE version of this upgrade would be available shortly. Does anyone know the differences between the free version and the €59 version? I think the only difference (apart from the fact that you have to download the free version) will be that it doesn't include all the European maps - only the maps for your own country.
Hopefully this will be released soon. I'm surprised it wasn't released before the CD version. |

whatever tomtom have said it is very unlikely - read not at all likely - that you will be able to download ttn5 with a new map for nothing.
At best you maybe able to download the app and purchase the specific town maps that are available via the plus service.
There is no way new or old uk maps will be available for download (without a fee).

Quote from TomTom website:
Quote: | Existing owners of TomTom Navigator 3, TomTom Navigator 2, TomTom Navigator for PalmOne, and the TomTom HP Navigation Packs for the HP iPAQ rz1710 Pocket PC and HP iPAQ hx2110 will be able to download for free the TomTom NAVIGATOR 5 software from the TomTom website (www.tomtom.com) when TomTom NAVIGATOR 5 is available. |
I'm not paying €59 just for a CD. I'll wait for the free download I think... |

Yes but I don't want the European maps. I'm only interested in the UK maps which will presumably be part of the free download (bearing in mind that the TT3 maps don't work with TT5). |

You won't be able to download maps - the only way you can get new maps is by buying the CDs. The good news is that for only 10 euros more than the GB upgrade last year you get the whole of Europe thrown in.

Did TomTom actually tell you that, or are you just assuming? Please post your source which says you won't be able to download the UK map. |

you could turn this around and ask where it states that the maps will be free.
The reason everyone is sure that the map isn't included is simple...
money:
1. every download will cost tomtom via a license fee to teleatlas
2. 100mb downloads cost money to supply
3. giving something away for free is economic suicide
4. finally why should they give the maps away - you have what you paid for; ttn3 with uk maps.
I am sure that the app will be freely downloadable - all the updates for ttn3 are basically full versions minus the voices - but only so you can subscribe to the plus services and buy the specific city/region maps you want.
The plus map service doesn't make any sense otherwise - if they are providing street level maps of europe to everyone why would they then reprovide single city maps for download?
Answer: because some people have the app with NO maps?
To be honest 59 euro's is barely more than the cost of a couple of decent country atlas's - compared to all other gps companies this is an absolute bargain.

You're right. TomTom have done a big fat U-turn on the free upgrade (the words "turn around when possible" come to mind ).

Dear Mr Gilbert,
Navigator 5 will not be available for download. You will have to purchase the upgrade. It will include maps of western europe and will cost 59 euros.
We hope to have answered your question to your satisfaction.
With best regards,

It would be nice if they decided on their upgrade policy BEFORE publishing it on their website. TomTom are very good at messing their customers around. I wouldn't mind if you choose which maps (as I really need the CA/AZ/NV USA maps) but I'm forced to have lots of European maps which I don't want. |
