Hi
I'm trying to decide whether to purchase a TomTom Go 500 or 700. I know it's pre-release at the moment but can anyone answer this query?
I am aware that the 700 uses a hard-disk instead of an SD card for storage, and comes preloaded with the maps of Europe. Will it be possible to install the latest GO USA maps on the 700:
- In co-exisance with the Europe maps (is 2.5 GB big enough)
- By formatting the h/d then installing the USA maps (with the option to reformat and reinstall the European maps)
Regards

I think the GO 700 is doomed. Who in his/her right mind would pay a premium for a hard disk that can break (moving parts) when there are already SD cards available with the same and even greater capacity, and at a lower price ?
All of the US/Canada needs 1.4 GB. Not sure what the size of the complete European maps is. _________________ Lutz

Thanks lbendlin.
I see your point, but I can get the 700 for only £60 more and get the following:
- 2.5 GB of disk space - I would need at least a 2GB SD card to fit the whole of Europe on (if you ever wanted to that is) an additional expense of about £120
- An extra 32MB of volatile RAM on the 700
- A remote control -?? dunno?? maybe its use will become apparent upon testing
- The whole of Europe maps, not just MROE as on the GO 500.
- Disk and therefore map access should be faster using the hard disk
It's quite a compelling argument - I guess it depends on if the h/d is replaceable if it breaks after expired warranty.
Looking forward to the reviews

I wouldn't worry about the hard disc reliability. There's been no outcry from users of MP3 players, and I'm sure the discs in those get a harder life. But 2.5 Gb seems a bit small when there's the whole world out there. |

There is currently not much choice when selecting 1" drives. I'm aware of a model from seagate (ST1) with 5GB and a brand new one with 6GB, but prices are substantially. We still have to see what brand is mounted in the GO 700, and I'm quite confident that this is the "Seagate ST1 2.5 GB"
Since Seagate goes for mass-market with this drive, it certainly does have a "standard interface" (compact-flash interface is mentioned).
Seagate advertizes this drives as "compatible with all existing integration standards for portable disc drive-based devices" so you should be able to change the one in the GO 700 without the use of hammer, once you have the need for that. |
