When I connect my USB lead to my Tom Tom it shows a red X on the screen near the picture of the USB port.Do I have to instal a driver on my PC before I can instal downloads on to the unit?

No. It just means don't unplug the USB cable while the SD card is still being written to. Give it about 20 secs after the SD card stops flashing before unplugging.
