Firstly can I say what a freindly forum this is :D
Right, I bought the cheap Tom Tom Navigator (HP edition) a couple of days ago from PC world (cant stand the shop, but is usefull if you want stuff out of hours), 1st thing I D/L the safety camera POI
I think Tom Tom will be a great help to my wife who is a midwife and travels as part of her job, also it's ease of use was quite surprising, so so simple to use.
A couple of points/Q's
Why did my Tom Tom miss a couple of short cuts I know of when traveling yesterday? (the roads were on the map and could of cut 2m off my journey?)
The HP rz1710 needs a soft reset nearly every time it's swiched on is this to be expected (unit will just freeze on startup)
Can I display my speed on th PDA? (sure I can do this)
I D/L the Safety Camera DB and loaded it successfully on the PDA, but am not getting the warning sound I specified (set to 300m, sure i done it correctly)
Where do the POI files come from? I read a post on here for Subaru garages and another refering to KFC resturants????? where do these come from?....

I purchased the exact same bundle and the same thing was happening to me. I found that if i exited tomtom before i switched off the device, it didn't hang when it was switched back on, it only seemed to do it if i turned off while tomtom was running. Although I have read reports about many IPAQ models with this freezing issue (there's lot on ebuyer complaining in the reviews).
Later I purchased a 512MB SD Card and transferred the tomtom data to it and it didn't happen again. I thought maybe the cards they badge up are poor quality, but saying that, the 128MB card that came with the package is a damn sight faster than any other SD card I have.
I ditched the 1710 a while ago and bought a new pda, an IPAQ H6340. And as yet, I have not had this problem occur on my new pda.
Perhaps you could try transferring the data from your tomtom sd card to a new blank one and see if it helps, they only cost a few quid.

With TomTom 4, unless you have a VGA display like on the new iPAQ HX4700, TomTom automatically removes the speed display in portrait mode to fit everything on. IIRC try rotating the screen to in TomTom's preferences if you can, I'm sure I've seen that work (I don't have TT4 to try it with)
