I have a Jabra Bluetooth earpiece which for most journeys sits silent in my left ear.
I have a tinny little speaker on my IPAQ 3970 which bawls instructions from Navigator 2 to try and make itself heard over the noise of the car radio.
Is there any way I can persuade the system to whisper instructions through my earpiece without losing the ability to talk and listen on the phone (I realise that the GPS might be prone to butting-in on phone conversations, but this is a price I might be willing to accept).

It's not possible. The Bluetooth headset can only be connected to one device at once - if it was connected to your iPAQ, it couldn't also be connected to your phone.
Further, I don't think there's any version of the Bluetooth stack on the 3970 that works properly with Bluetooth audio. The features are in the Pocket PC 2003 one (you can enable them with a registry hack), but like many people I found they didn't work - in my case with a Nokia HDW-2 headset. I suspect that's why they're disabled by default.

I think the only practical answer to this problem is a PDA mount with built in speakers - like the Seido mount for example (which I intend to purchase) which apparently greatly enhances the volume of the verbal directions. I too would like the ability of hear the directions thru my bluetooth headset - maybe someone will develop the ability to do so? In the meantime I think the mount is the only realistic solution to poor volume.
