I have a Mitac Mio 168 with no modem/WiFi. If I connect it to my desktop PC via the USB cable, is it possible for the PDA to dial up using my desktop's ADSL modem, or does it need it's own modem card?

If not, am I right in assuming I need to buy a WiFi SD card (e.g. Sandisk), and then get a wireless router for my desktop PC? I realise this would only let me connect when near the router, but it would be nice to be able to "surf" on the move (even if it is just 'round the house!)

Sorry for the painfully "newbie" question :D

Thanks

When you are connect to your main PC via ActiveSync click on Tools - Options - then you will see at the bottom of that tab an area that says Rules, you can select The Internet, then your mio168 should be connected to the internet if your main PC is connected to the internet.

To check, on your mio168 goto Start - Programs - Internet Explorer - and type in an address, if all is OK then the page should display!

Don't forget to change the ActiveSync properties back to Work (or what was the default shown) before trying this out.

Best regards,

You can't have two ADSL modems on one line - they interfere with each other. Using routers is by far the best way ahead.

I'm using an iPAQ hx4700, which has built in Wi-Fi. My ADSL is connected to my house network via two routers (I'm not going to go into the details of why here simply because it's off topic - but I have a main router with a cheap ADSL router behind it to connect the main router to the ADSL line), and I have a wireless Access Point on my network that the Pocket PC uses.

This means that I can access the Internet around the house with the Pocket PC or my laptop. I can also play music from network shares on my main PC using Conduits' Pocket Player on the Pocket PC. ActiveSync over a network link is much faster than ActiveSync over cable, cradle or Bluetooth.

The Passthrough setting in ActiveSync that Pocketgps mentions is to do with access to a network. "Work" means "a LAN" and "The Internet" is self explanatory. If you don't have your own network, change the setting to "The Internet". I don't know whether ActiveSync will pass through to the Internet if you have "Work" selected - you can only try.

Thanks guys

I managed to get a 'wired' connection via activesync, and have set it up to capture my POP mail too.

Much appreciated.
