There is an intersection about 1/4 mile from my house that was changed to an overpass a couple years ago. Every map I've seen online or downloaded for use with GPS has the intersection still and tries to route me through the intersection every chance it gets. This makes any routes I create to/from my home incorrect.

Is there any way to modify a map? I would absolutely love to be able to change that intersection to an overpass. There are also some roads which do not exist on the maps that I would love to add.

If there is no way to modify a map, is there any way to make the program avoid the intersection? I know this has been discussed on a route by route basis for avoiding traffic and accidents, but I want to be able to set permanent avoidance rules.

Thanks,
Gaines

Hello and welcome to the forum.

It is not possible to change map data (and will never be possible). Please report your finding to NAVTEQ.

Also, Mapopolis does not have temporary or permanent avoids. You can select a point away from the intersection and set it as "route through" but that's just for the current route.

While your problem is valid it is also irrelevant. You know that area because you live there. There is no need for the navigation program to help you in your neighborhood. It can only help you in places you don't know.

While my specific circumstance is easily worked around, the problem is hardly "irrelevant" since I can think of numerous situations where you would go somewhere very rarely and being able to correct the map would be helpful for the next time you go there, possibly from a different direction/path.

Also, I've lived in Nashville since 1997 and proabably only use 1% of the streets that I could simply because I don't know where they go and what connects to what. I may know that a road no longer exists or connects to another, but part of the benefit of routing is that it suggest paths I don't know about. I would personally love to learn some new routes in a town I already know my way around, but it's very hard to do when your mapping software creates routes based on errant data.

I have been very impressed by the quick response from Cheryl at Mapopolis support. She suggested I either:
A) Create a maplet which I use instead of my home. I have a hard time seeing how this would be a good solution unless you lived in such a place where you always went in a certain direction to leave. Either way, it's not really a correct but more of a way to avoid the problem. If there has been a lot of construction in the area (as is the case in Nashville) then that avoidance becomes very difficult and you'd almost plan your routes manually.
B) Use ROUTE THRU to bypass the anomoly. As I understand, this has to be done every time you create a route and it's basically the same thing as creating a maplet.

I know I've talked to people who had GPS systems where they could draw new roads and mark off old ones. Is this truly only available in proprietary $3,000 GPS systems, or is there not software that can do this for the PocketPC?

One point I forgot to make is that I would be very willing to make corrections for a Nashville map which could then be used by people visiting Nashville. An entire mapopolis user community could grow from being able to make correction files for various areas.

Ideally, corrections could be made and saved in separate files which could then be used with the base maps. This would allow for Mapopolis to sell the maps as they currently do without having to rely solely on the accuracy of Navteq.

Just my $0.02

I very much doubt those programs were used for street navigation. Certainly not public domain programs.

Don't know if you have heard of the GPX format yet - ths is basically GPS XML, and allows to describe topographic features like waypoints and positions) as well as vector based data (like street maneuvres).

It would really be cool if there would be an open source project that would map the outside world in GPX and would then be made available to all internet users. Even though this would mean a serious dip in the profit of the likes of NAVTEQ or TeleAtlas.

Mapopolis are only the middleman. They have to decide what features to implement (like permanent avoids) but they have no way to work against the agreement with their map provider NAVTEQ which explicitly forbids changing of the map data.
