Does the processing power/speed of your PDA make a difference to the speed at which the screen updates, when driving? Obviously route calculations would be better.
For instance, if you had a super-fast processor, and mega-quick ram, would your screen update in near-realtime? Or is it somehow limited by the signal coming from the GPS mouse?
I'm asking because I have an Ipaq 3630, and was wondering if the newer PDAs are any faster. |

I run ttn3 on a 2210 and as a backup a 3850 - the routing is quicker everything else is much the same - 'cept the 3850 has a bigger (but less bright) screen.
Only difference is I use a bt gps on the 2210 and a haicom wired gps with the 3850.
I guess you won't notice much difference unless you drive that mythical pocketgps route of lands end to JoG regularly!

The position update is usually once per second, whatever the speed of the processor. |

I am running TT3 on an iPAQ 3830, my current setup is shown below. I previously ran TT2 from March 2003 as a new system with a 256MB CF card for the maps.
During the period March 2003 to June 2004 ( I upgraded to TT3 in April 2004), I experienced crashes and lockups etc which I attributed to the limited 32MB of onboard RAM. Alternative routes were a deffinite no no. I was always careful to maximise the available programme RAM of approx 15MB free.
Prior to a trip to France and Italy I purchased TT3 Maps of Western Europe, also my current 512MB Viking CF card. After installing the various maps, including some GB segments on the new card, the performance of the whole system was completely transformed. No lockups or freezing and smooth scrolling etc. No problems at all when we were away for 2 weeks and drove about 3000 miles.
Swapping back, as atemporary trial, to the original card, brought back the old problems. I would add that I used Softwinter Storage Tools on both cards.
Clearly the new card is of a much higher quality and the system copes well on its low base RAM. Also, I believe the route calculation times are quicker than before but this could be affected by formatting parameters. FAT32 and cluster sizes etc.
I haven't had experience of newer PDA's, but if you are able to tryout different memory cards, that may prove to be informative. _________________ John

The screen update speed is dictated more by the GPS Receiver than the power of your PDA. Most GPS Receivers provide updates at 1Hz (once per second) and a faster processor and more memory will not improve this. _________________ Darren Griffin |
