Say I purchase a TomTom Go (UK version)...

...and I want to get the most up to date UP map. Do I simply download/install "Update June 2004 – TomTom GO 4.21" or do I have to purchase some sort of CD?

Could anyone shed a bit more light into the workings of the TomTom Go for me. For example, is the software actually installed within the machine and only references on the SD card or is it all on the SD card, and thus can be replaced with other software?

The most up to date maps will be the ones released with the original GO. All you are getting with the June 4.21 update is bug fixes.

If TomTom use their normal practices then you will get a map update every year. Often with a major(ish) software update. In between you will get bug fixes and minor software updates as required.

Of course not. They have to pay for the updated maps, so if they were to give the updates away free then they would make a huge loss and over time would not be able to continue their business.

TomTom do usually have respectible map upgrades at around £30-40 which is lower than most, but don't expect them for free.

Unfortunately most GPS companies have to pay royalties on a per license basis, so if they have to give away 500,000 copies free, they're still paying for the license data for 500,000 copies.
