|
|
Hi, I am looking to get USA maps for an upcoming holiday but not sure what option to take.
I have a TT One V2 (with Sd card slot) or a TT One 30 V4 that I can use.
Firstly, I’ve seen the second hand, but genuine TT, maps on ebay that come on a SD card.
Are they locked in any way to the original users TT? Will they slot in and work straight away on my V2?
I favour this option as I could possibly sell the map on again after the holiday. Am I doing anything wrong by doing this?
Secondly, I see I could download the maps straight from the TT site.
Sorry to ask, but how does this work? Can the map be downloaded to a SD card, used for the holiday, then be ‘sold on’ as above? Or is it locked to me or my device?
Thanks in advance for your advice. |

A lot of the maps installed to a memory card are actually locked to the SD card ID and cannot be transfered to other devices/ cards - if I were you I would stick with the TomTom Home purchase/ download and install to be on the safe side - Mike |

Appreciate your advice – can you just clarify this:

Is it the case that Genuine maps on a genuine TT SD card cannot be used in another device once its been used and removed from one. (Not copied in any way between cards, just slotted out of one TT and then into another.) How does the card know? |

There are two different methods for activation of a map:
1/ Locked to an SD card, the S in SD stands for secure and the card contains a unique code number that cannot be read via normal card readers/ PC's etc, the map activation is tied to this card number which prevents anyone from copying the files to another card. The card itself is not locked to a single device and can be moved from one device to another without any issues - you couldn't copy the contents of the map folder from such a card to a device with internal Flash memory as it simply won't work.
2/ Locked to device ID, this is where the map activation code is tied to a specific TomTom hardware and is the most common form of copy protection, you can copy the map to a larger memory card if the device supports external storage cards such as the earlier One, XL, Rider and Go products without any issue. You cannot swap the map to a different device as its activated and therefore locked to a single device - Mike |

Mike – Thanks for your excellent explanation, that makes things clearer.
So, it begs the question, is there any way I would know which type someone was selling? From the map version number maybe? Or any other way? I could do with the one in your first explanation.
I do favour the option to buy a SD card map and sell it on, I know its being a bit tight!, but I probably wont bother otherwise. |

Impossible to identify and you also run the risk of buying a pirated map. A lot of the maps offered on eBay are not legitimate.
You should also consider that the map data will be old, TT haven't sold maps on SD card for some time now. If you buy direct you are at least guaranteed of the latest data. _________________ Darren Griffin |

Darren, this link http://www.tomtom.com/products/accessories/index.php?AccessoryCategory=9 goes to the page on TT where maps on SD Cards are available for purchase. Could these not be used? _________________ Ric - TomTom 520 DEAD - Passed to the great traffic jam in the sky. Now using Maps & Waze on Samsung Galaxy S4 + CamerAlert of course! |

It would be nice to know what type of ‘locking’ those SD maps use. How can I find out?
By the way, I’m not looking to do anything wrong like copying the maps, just want to use the map, take it out, then sell it on for someone to get the usage (and for me to get some money back on something I wont use again). but never mind if it cant be done. |

There's a brief explanation of it on Wikipaedia

As far as I know that should not be a problem.
To prove it, if your model had maps installed on an SD card when you bought it new, then they will be of this type. If you know anyone else with a TomTom, just pop that card into their device and it should work just fine. |

That's the one thing it can't be as I can't drink whilst I have my leg frame on. Not had a drink for a month now. 5mths to go! _________________ Darren Griffin |
