Following on from the announcement that the European GPS Constellation Galileo was to be a subscription service when it goes live in 2006, it has been discovered that Navstar, the US GPS Service, have plans to migrate to a subscription model themselves.

In response to escalating operating costs and the urgent requirement to replace 8 aging satellites the US DoD appears to have decided that a public subscription model can no longer be ignored given the rapidly increasing demand for GPS devices bu non-defence users.

It used to be the cause of much hilarity when potential GPS users enquired of the service costs but as the old adage goes, "nothing is free in this world" and so it seems it is the end of an era for the until now almost unique free nature of the GPS service.

Details of the fee structure has yet to be announced but Navstar have intimated that 5 May will be the day.
