German news outlet Heise have a story on what must be one of the first field tests of AGPS. AGPS (Assisted GPS) takes some of the computing load off the GPS receiver, namely by providing the GPS base data (Almanac and Ephemeris) as well as the UTC time via a GPRS link.

Comments ?

The advantage of that approach is that a receiver doesn't need to collect that information from the satellites, and can instead focus on getting a fix - now a matter of milliseconds rather than minutes !

The translation is very rough, but you can get the basic idea here

More information on AGPS can be found in the Wikipedia.
