Eutelsat 5, a communications satellite which launched on October 9th, is reported to have had an 'incident' affecting one of the two solar arrays.

Eutelsat 5 is primarily used for TV Broadcast services but also contains equipment used to provide an EGNOS (European Geostationary Navigation Overlay System) node to augment navigation signals for the Galileo navigation network, in a contract worth 102 million euros.

Little is known about the nature of this incident, after launch from Baikonur, Eutelsat 5 used its on-board propulsion to circularise its geostationary orbit 22,000 miles over the equator. A statement from Eutelsat suggests that the incident occurred after reaching geostationary orbit.

An investigation with the satellite builder, Northrop Grumman is now underway to establish the cause and impact on service.
