A team of design and engineering students from Imperial College and the RCA have developed an open-source navigation system that relies on the sun instead of GPS satellites.

Named Aweigh, the system is similar to the way in which a sextant, used for hundred of years as a navigation tool, works. Aweigh can also be used on cloudy days, requires no internet connection to operate and, unlike satellite navigation, cannot be jammed or spoofed!

The prototype has a Raspberry Pi computer at its core but the designers hope that others will take the open source design and develop it further. Full instructions on how to build your own are provided.
