A statement released by Facebook on Monday has triggered a media frenzy. In the statement, the US social media company admitted that they used location information to suggest friends via their 'people you may know' feature.

This revelation has unsettled users concerned over privacy issues and personal security. The possibility that the list may include people you may not know but have passed in a street and the worry that your picture and name is being suggested to complete strangers all adding up to yet another digital privacy debate for users of the social network.

Facebook subsequently retracted their admission that location data is being used but this has not appeased users who recount examples of friend suggestions that could not be explained unless location data was being used.
