Apple has acquired GPS company Coherent Navigation Inc, a company based in San Mateo, California, and only a stones throw from Silicon Valley and Apple HQ.

Coherent Navigation was founded in 2008 by William Bencze and Brent Ledvina and focussed on a high accuracy GPS solution called iGPS.

iGPS is a system that combines data from traditional GPS networks and from Iridium's voice and data satellite network. The system provides higher accuracy positioning together with improved resistance to jamming. The system is claimed to offer sub centimeter accuracy.

With Apple flush with cash and working hard to improve its mapping apps and services this acquisition it seems likely that they have bought the company to bolster those efforts.

Coherent Navigation's website has now been taken off-line and name servers for their domain now point to apple.com.
