Researchers in the Cockrell School of Engineering at The University of Texas have developed a centimeter-accurate GPS based positioning system which could revolutionise geolocation.

Unlike existing high accuracy technology which requires survey grade antennas and other costly hardware, this system uses a software defined receiver (SDR) and can extract carrier level accurate data using inexpensive antennas to extract carrier phase measurements.

The system is so accurate that it can measure the tilt or rotation of a VR headset. The researchers have co-founded a startup, called Radiosense, and are now working with Samsung to further develop the technology.
