Navteq, one of the major mapping providers has announced "Elevation Contors to Enhance Navigation System Map Display".

Dont get too excited yet. All this means is that the developers of mapping systems now have access to the contor model and could produce mapping data rendered in proper 3D.

Elevation data has been available for a number of years in "DEM" format, which has been used in the 3D modelling as seen in applications like MamoryMap and Anquet. Navteq are oppening up the possibilities of achieving the same for Street Routing applications.

A small drwaback will be the sheer processing power needed to render 3D maps. It can certainly be done on the PC, and is possible on the PDA, with reduced information. Maptech have a marine product called Pocket Contor which does this.
