 In a bizarre (Bablyon 5) style accident, it has been reported that a meteor that the hubble telescope has been tracking for some time on a close course to earth has collided with not 1 but 4 US built Lockheed Martin GPS satellites in a collision pushing them further towards the earth and creating a problem for GPS users.
The 4 satellites have been temporarily de-activated until the US Department of Defence (DOD) can come up with a contingency plan to bring these back into outer orbit a spokeman said.
The good news for GPS users is it's only 4 satellites out of 24 that are affected, but seeing that many people only get a 7 sat fix, European users may start to experience problems in acquiring satellite locks around the times of 6am and 12pm. The new path of two of the satellites has been claimed to have been coming extremely close to Sky's Astra satellite which could pose problems for UK users with intermittent reception problems when these satellites come within 100 miles of each other.
